Getting Here

How to get to: No 1 Old Tanrhiw, Beddgelert, Gwynedd LL55 4NF

Sat Nav to the village, Old Tanrhiw is opposite Cae Du Campsite!

Unless you live in the North of the U.K., you will need to get to the M6 heading North. You can do this in a number of ways, depending on where you live, but from the S.E you will need to use the M1 or M40/M42 to get to the M6, but from the SW you will use the M5. Just don’t use the M6 Toll as it joins the real M6 too far North to make the next junction with the M54

O.K. now you’re on the M6, hopefully heading North, and bombing around Birmingham. If you do this bit in the mid morning you will hopefully miss most of the traffic queues, but if you get into one, just grin and bear it as it (hopefully) won’t last for ever!

Remain on the M6 until you have left the built up area and passed junctions for the M5 (unless you used the M5 to get to the M6), Walsall and so on and then watch for a left filter for the M54 which is the next road you need. Stay on this road, passing Telford, until it turns into ordinary dual carriageway (Shrewsbury bypass) and then to single carriageway road. This is the A5 and you can thank the Romans for building it for you! STAY ON THE A5 as this will take you to Wales. As you continue, you will pass through Llangollen then Corwen which are the biggest built up areas on the Welsh part of the route, then, after Corwen you will get to Betws-y-Coed. I mention this because the next little village you will pass through is Capel Curig and this is where you will have to be careful as you need to turn LEFT off the A5 at this point following signs for Beddgelert (A4086 then A498). You are now definitely in Snowdonia and after less than a mile on this road, if it is a nice day, you will see the Snowdonia range of peaks in front of you in the distance. Continue on this road and it will eventually narrow into a steep windy downhill pass (the Pen-y-Gwryd pass). At the bottom you will pass a lake on the right (Llyn Gwynant) continue on and you will pass another lake on the left (Llyn Dinas) When you have passed this lake you only have a mile or so to go, so keep your eyes peeled for the copper mine on the left and after this the Beddgelert sign. If you pass the Beddgelert sign you have gone slightly too far. As you approach this sign, you will see a lay by on the right. Park there and the cottage is next to the lay by – you can’t possibly miss it – especially with this picture. You can just see the start of the lay by in the bottom left of the picture. You will be coming down this road so the cottage will be on your right.

Route from the North:

You will need to use a suitable route to get you to the Southwest of Manchester (M1, M6, M56) and then pick up the A55. Follow this fast dual carriageway into North Wales, passing through Colwyn Bay, under the estuary at Conway and then to Llanfairfechan. Continue on this road towards Bangor, but just before you get there, there is a turning signed for Betws-y-Coed and this puts you on the A5. Pass through Bethesda, and Capel Curig is next, at which place you turn right (A4086 then A498) and you can follow the instructions as given above.
